US University Preparation for International Students
A starting point for families who need to coordinate SAT, TOEFL, IELTS, SSAT, academic English, school workload and US university preparation while their child studies outside the United States.
Different students need different combinations of testing and academic support. The useful first step is understanding the student’s current school system, English level, likely destination and application timeline.
For families preparing from outside the United States
A student may attend an international school, bilingual school or local school while considering university in the United States.
The questions usually become more specific as the student approaches the application stage: whether SAT is relevant, whether English proficiency must be demonstrated, how school grades fit the application and when testing should happen.
This hub helps families move from those broad questions to the right exam or country-specific page.
Start with the student’s current situation before choosing an exam
It is easy to begin with exam names because SAT, TOEFL, IELTS and SSAT are measurable.
The better starting point is the student’s current grade, curriculum, English level, academic record and intended route.
School
Understand the curriculum, subjects, grades and academic workload the student already has.
Destination
Identify whether the student is mainly considering US universities, boarding school or several international routes.
Testing
Check which exams are actually required, accepted or useful before beginning preparation.
Testing is only one part of the university application
Application requirements differ between universities, but students may need to submit an academic record, written application materials, recommendations and testing where applicable.
English proficiency requirements can also vary according to the institution, programme and applicant’s previous education.
School record
Grades, subjects and the context of the student’s curriculum form part of the academic picture.
SAT or ACT
May be required, accepted or considered depending on the university’s current testing policy.
English proficiency
TOEFL, IELTS or another accepted qualification may be relevant depending on the institution.
Application work
Essays, recommendations and other materials need their own preparation time.
SAT, TOEFL, IELTS and SSAT have different roles
International students do not automatically need all of these exams.
| Exam | Main purpose | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| SAT | Academic testing used in some US undergraduate applications. | The current testing policies of likely universities. |
| TOEFL | Evidence of English-language proficiency. | Whether the university requires it and whether an exemption applies. |
| IELTS Academic | Another widely accepted English-proficiency test. | Whether the institution accepts it and the required score. |
| SSAT | Admissions testing used by some independent and boarding schools. | Whether the target school requires or considers the test. |
SAT preparation should begin with the student’s university list and current score
Testing policies vary, so families should first understand how the institutions being considered currently use SAT results.
If the SAT belongs in the application plan, a diagnostic can show whether the student mainly needs work in Reading and Writing, Math, timing or test execution.
Explore SAT tutoring →TOEFL and IELTS should be chosen from actual university requirements
Students studying in English do not necessarily receive the same exemption from every university.
Before preparing for an English test, check whether the target institutions require formal evidence of English proficiency and which tests they accept.
TOEFL
Used by many universities as evidence of academic English, subject to each institution’s current policy.
TOEFL preparation →IELTS Academic
Another widely accepted English-proficiency route. Required scores and exemptions vary by institution.
IELTS preparation →SSAT is for a different stage of the education pathway
SSAT is not a university admissions test.
It may become relevant when a younger student is applying to an independent or boarding school that requires or considers it.
Families should check individual school requirements before beginning preparation.
SSAT preparation →English proficiency and academic test performance are not the same thing
A student can speak English confidently and still struggle with dense reading, vocabulary in context, analytical writing or timed academic tasks.
Those gaps can affect schoolwork as well as SAT, TOEFL and IELTS preparation.
Reading
Work with complex arguments, evidence and unfamiliar academic language.
Writing
Organise ideas clearly and use language accurately for academic tasks.
Timed work
Apply those skills under the timing and format of the relevant assessment.
IB, AP, A-Level and local curricula create different workloads
Students preparing for US universities may come from very different school systems.
External preparation should fit around what the student is already doing rather than duplicate schoolwork or compete unnecessarily with major academic deadlines.
IB
Consider internal assessments, predicted grades and Higher Level subject workload before adding intensive test preparation.
AP / American-style
Review course load, school grades and how much SAT-specific work is still needed outside class.
A-Level or other curricula
Check whether additional academic English or testing preparation is needed for the intended US university route.
There is no universal Grade 9 to Grade 12 testing sequence
Students in the same school year can be at very different stages.
One student may need academic English first. Another may be ready for SAT preparation. A third may already have testing completed and need to concentrate on school or application work.
The useful timeline is the one built from the student’s current level and actual deadlines.
Online preparation can work well when it matches the student’s schedule and needs
Families living internationally may not have access to the same specialist tutors locally.
Online preparation can make scheduling easier across school commitments and travel, but the format itself is not what determines quality.
The important questions are whether the student receives targeted instruction, appropriate practice and regular review of progress.

Preparation should respond to the student’s actual academic gaps
Review
Current school, grade, curriculum, English level, testing history and likely application timeline.
Diagnose
Identify whether the priority is SAT, TOEFL, IELTS, SSAT or underlying academic English.
Prepare
Focus the work on the student’s weaknesses and adjust the plan as performance changes.
International students preparing for US universities
Do international students need the SAT for US universities?
Not always. US universities use different testing policies, which may change between admission cycles. Families should check the current policy of likely target institutions before deciding whether SAT preparation is necessary.
Do international students need TOEFL or IELTS?
Some do and some do not. English-proficiency requirements and exemptions depend on the university, programme and the student’s previous education.
Should a student prepare for SAT or TOEFL first?
The answer depends on current English ability, SAT performance, university requirements and the available timeline. A diagnostic can help show which area needs attention first.
Can students prepare for the SAT while doing IB, AP or A-Level?
Yes. Preparation should be scheduled around school examinations, coursework and periods of heavier academic workload.
What SAT score should an international student aim for?
There is no single target that applies to every student. A useful target should reflect the student’s university list, current score and the way those institutions currently use SAT results.
Is SSAT required for US boarding schools?
Not by every school. Families should check the current admissions requirements of each target school before beginning SSAT preparation.
Can international students prepare online?
Yes. One-to-one online preparation can cover SAT, TOEFL, IELTS, SSAT or academic English and can be scheduled around the student’s school timetable and location.
When should preparation begin?
Start by identifying the student’s current level, likely application year and required exams. Preparation can then be scheduled backwards from real deadlines rather than from a fixed school-grade formula.
Tell us where your child is studying and which university route you are considering
You do not need to know yet whether SAT, TOEFL, IELTS, SSAT or academic English should come first.
Send us the student’s current grade, curriculum, English level if known, any existing test scores and the approximate application timeline. We can then discuss which preparation is relevant from that starting point.
